Gastrin stimulates the secretion of gastric acid from parietal cells and promotes growth of the gastric mucosa. These physiological effects are reflected in the classical features of the gastrinoma syndrome inwhich gastrin is hypersecreted. Infusions of gastrin provoke increased contractility of smooth muscle in the lower oesophagus and stomach, but the physiological significance of this action is unclear.
